Reconnecting your social media and adding additional accounts

Occasionally, the integration between Gipper and your social media accounts will be disrupted due to a change in your Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter account. In many cases, simply disconnecting the account(s) from Gipper and then reconnecting them will resolve the issue.

The process to add an additional Facebook page or Instagram account can also be slightly different than the original connection process.

Disconnection/Reconnection Overview

Gipper uses access tokens to connect to your social accounts. These tokens, provided by social networks, enable our platform to manage your social media activities seamlessly. However, when an access token expires or becomes invalid, you’ll need to reconnect your social account to Gipper. This process generates a new token.

Each social network has policies and security measures designed to protect user accounts and data. When a social network detects specific actions on an account, it may force the token to expire, causing the account to disconnect from Gipper.

As an external partner of social networks, Gipper adheres to these security measures, which can be more stringent than what users experience on the social networks themselves. Although disconnections can be inconvenient, they serve to protect your account.

Preventing Disconnections

While some disconnections are unavoidable, many can be prevented by following best practices. Here’s how you can safeguard against social account disconnections:

Token Expiration

Tokens can expire due to several reasons:

•Manual Updates to Your Account Settings: Changes like updating your password can cause tokens to expire.

•Social Network Security Measures: Social networks may force tokens to expire as a precaution.

•Token Lifespans: Tokens have built-in expiration dates and will eventually expire.

Changes to Account Settings Resulting in Disconnection

Gipper relies on the settings you maintain within each social network. Making certain changes can result in your account disconnecting from our platform. Here are some common changes that can cause disconnections:

•Username or Password Changes: If you change your username or password for a connected social account, it will disconnect from Gipper. For example, changing your Facebook password will disconnect your Facebook account from Gipper.

•Revoking Access: If you revoke Gipper’s access to your social account, it will disconnect. Social accounts have settings that list which apps have permission to connect. Gipper must remain on that list to publish to your social accounts. If you manually revoke access, your account will disconnect.

•Loss of Admin Status: If the user who added a social account to Gipper loses their admin status or access to the account, it will disconnect from Gipper.

Security Measures Resulting in Disconnection

To keep your social account secure, a social network might disconnect the account from Gipper when it identifies certain behaviors. The following actions are likely to trigger disconnections and should be avoided:

•Using Alias Usernames: Avoid using usernames that don’t appear to be real names.

•Multiple IP Logins: Logging in with the same account credentials from different IP addresses (sharing logins between users or devices) can trigger a disconnection.

•Inappropriate Content: Publishing content flagged for copyright violations or other inappropriate material can result in disconnection.

Token Lifespans for Each Social Network

Tokens from each social network have built-in expiration dates. Disconnections can be expected based on each social network’s authentication policy. It’s important to be aware of these policies to anticipate when a reconnection may be needed.

Top disconnection reasons

Gipper displays the specific reason for your disconnections whenever possible. The following sections describe the most common errors we receive from each social network:

Facebook and Instagram Business

The following sections describe the top reasons for Facebook and Instagram Business disconnection.

• Password/Security - Most Common
  • Your Facebook account password gets updated.
  • Facebook has detected what it thinks is a suspicious login attempt to your account. This includes logging in from a device or web browser that Facebook doesn’t recognize.
• Access Revoked
  • When you connect your Facebook account to Gipper, Gipper is authorized in your Facebook account’s Business Integrations. If Gipper is removed from the authorized connections list, its access to your Facebook account is revoked and your Facebook account, including all your Pages and associated Instagram Business accounts, are disconnected from Gipper.
• Security Checkpoint
  • When Facebook thinks your account security may be compromised, it triggers a security check when you log in. Security checks are different ways of confirming your identity. For example, they might ask you to identify friends in a tagged photo, or provide your date of birth. This needs to be completed before you or Gipper can access the account.
  • Actions that can trigger security checks include:
    • Compromised accounts
    • Unrecognized logins
    • Incomplete setup of two-factor authentication
    • Reports of inappropriate content
    • Copyright violations
• Facebook Token Expired
  • Facebook supplies tokens that allow Gipper to access and connect to your account. When a token expires, your Facebook account, including all your Pages and associated Instagram Business accounts, disconnect from Gipper.
  • This disconnection occurs with the following actions:
    • The token has reached its built-in expiration date.
    • Tokens have built-in expiration dates for security so that a single token can’t grant access to your information forever. You will need to reconnect your Facebook account on a regular basis to get a new token and confirm Gipper is still authorized to access your Facebook account.
    • The user who connected the account to Gipper is no longer an Admin of the Facebook Page or account.
    • To add a Facebook Page to Gipper, your Facebook user must be an Admin of the Page. If your Admin role is later removed, the Page will disconnect from Gipper
• Unconfirmed Facebook Account
  • This error means there’s an issue with your account that you need to resolve on Facebook before you can reconnect it to Gipper
• Insufficient Page Role
  • To add a Facebook Page to Gipper, your Facebook account must have a Page role of Admin or Editor if it's a classic Page type or Facebook access with full control or partial control on a new Page type. This disconnection occurs when the user who connected the account no longer has sufficient access to the Facebook Page. Their role may have changed or their account was removed from the Page.
• Gipper Lacks Page Permissions
  • This error means that Gipper is missing a permission it needs to complete an action on your behalf for a Facebook Page or Instagram Business profile. When Gipper performs an action, it causes your social account to disconnect.
  • When you add your Facebook account to Gipper, you are asked to grant Gipper permissions to manage your Page. If you do not grant all permissions, then your account could be in a state of constant disconnection.
  • Permissions can also be revoked in your Facebook account's business integrations, where Gipper is authorized as a connected app.
  • Gipper may not have permissions for any newer Facebook features or recently created Pages.
  • Another possible reason for this disconnection for an Instagram Business profile is that it was switched to a Personal profile. You will need to switch it back to a Business profile before you can reconnect.
• Page Restriction Settings
  • This error means that Gipper can't access some of your Page's data that it has requested from Facebook. The most common cause for this is when the Page has country or age restrictions, or if the Page itself is not published.
• 2FA Not Found
  • Facebook requires two-factor authentication on Facebook accounts to prevent unauthorized access to Business Manager and Pages with large audiences. You need to add this extra layer of security to your Facebook account because it meets one of the following conditions:
    • Your Facebook Page is an asset in Business Manager.
    • The Facebook Page associated with your Instagram Business account is an asset in Business Manager.
    • Your Facebook Page has a large audience.
• Your Instagram Account is a Creator
  • Due to limitations from Instagram, Creator accounts do not have access to direct publishing.

Twitter/X

The following sections describe the top disconnection reasons for Twitter.

• Locked Twitter Account
  • When Twitter suspects that account security may be compromised, it temporarily locks the account, disconnecting it from Gipper. Accounts are locked when Twitter detects suspicious behavior that violates Twitter Rules or Terms of Service.
  • Reconnecting Your Twitter Account
    • Before you can reconnect your Twitter account to Gipper, you need to sign in to Twitter and restore your account. 
  • Common Reasons for Account Locking
    • Suspicious Behavior:
      • Twitter may lock your account if it detects activities such as:
      • Unusual login attempts from different locations or devices.
      • Rapid following or unfollowing of accounts.
      • Posting duplicate or spammy content.
  • Recommendations to Prevent Account Locking
    • Regular Monitoring:
      • Keep an eye on your account activities and review any notifications from Twitter regarding suspicious behavior.
      • Avoid sharing your login credentials with multiple users or devices.
    • Adherence to Twitter Rules:
      • Familiarize yourself with Twitter’s rules and terms of service to ensure compliance.
      • Avoid activities that may be perceived as spammy or abusive.
• Twitter Access Revoked
  • When you connect your Twitter account to Gipper, Gipper is authorized as a connected app. If Gipper is removed from the authorized connections list, its access to your Twitter account is revoked, and your Twitter account is disconnected.
  • Revoking Access as a Troubleshooting Step
    • Revoking access to a social account can be a necessary troubleshooting step. It starts you with a clean slate before you reconnect that account to Gipper. Make sure you and your team understand the effects of revoking Gipper’s access to a Twitter account.
  • Recommendations to Maintain Access
    • Review Authorized Apps:
      • Regularly check your Twitter account’s settings to ensure Gipper remains an authorized app.
      • Avoid manually removing Gipper unless troubleshooting.
    • Team Communication:
      • Ensure all team members understand the implications of revoking access and coordinate any changes.
• Suspended Twitter Account
  • Twitter suspends access to accounts that violate its rules or that may have been hacked. If your account is suspended, visit Twitter to understand the reason for suspension. Sometimes accounts are suspended by mistake. If you are unable to unsuspend your account, you’ll need to file an appeal with Twitter.
    • Common Reasons for Account Suspension
      • Accounts are most commonly suspended for being:
        • Fake or Spam: Creating fake accounts or engaging in spammy behavior.
        • Hacked: To prevent potentially malicious activity.
        • Abusive: Reported for abusive behavior.
    • Preventing Account Suspension
      • Familiarity with Twitter Rules:
        • Make sure you’re familiar with and follow the Twitter Rules of conduct.

      • Account Security:

        • Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
  • Reconnecting After Suspension
    • When you regain access to your account, you will be able to reconnect the account to Gipper. Follow the necessary steps provided by Twitter to restore your account and maintain compliance with their rules to prevent future suspensions.

Disconnecting and reconnecting

To disconnect and reconnect your account(s) to Gipper

1. Select the profile icon in the upper right corner of the platform
2. Select "Social media accounts"
3. Scroll to the social media accounts that were disrupted (if you're a workspace owner or admin they can be listed under workspace or personal social media accounts)
4. Select the three dots button next to the social media account(s) you need to disconnect
5. Click "Delete"
6. Select "Yes, Disconnect My Account" and repeat the above process for each social media account
7. Click "Add account" in whichever social media accounts section the accounts were connected previously (workspace or personal)

Adding an Additional Facebook or Instagram Account

If you already have a Facebook and Instagram account connected to your Gipper account, and would like to add another, you will have to edit the previous settings to ensure that Gipper is able to register and select the new accounts.

To add an additional Facebook page or Instagram account when you already have one/multiple linked:

1. Navigate to your settings by clicking on the profile icon on the top right-hand corner
2. Select “Social Media Accounts”
3. Click “Add Account”
   • Note: All users can connect Personal Social Media accounts, but only Owners/Admins can connect Workspace Social Media accounts. The difference is that Personal accounts can only be viewed and published by that individual user, while Workspace accounts can be shared with Group. This allows any Group Members to post to the shared accounts. 
4. Select “Facebook” or “Instagram”
   • Note: If you are connecting both a Facebook and an Instagram account, select “Facebook” - because the integration goes through Facebook, you will still be able to select your Instagram account through this option.
5. Click “Connect a Page”
6. From here, a new window will pop up. If it asks you to “Continue” as yourself, please do so.
7. Click “Edit Previous Settings”
8. Click “Opt into Current Pages Only” and ensure the page you are trying to link is checked, as well as any other pages you are hoping to connect
9. Click “Opt into Current Businesses Only” and ensure all relevant businesses are checked
10. Click “Opt into Current Instagram Accounts Only” and ensure all relevant Instagram accounts are checked
11. Click “Save" and then "Got it"
12. When back in Gipper, make sure both Facebook and Instagram accounts are checked, and click “Connect to Gipper”
