Setting up Gipper Display with a ChromeOS device

Learn how to run Gipper Display on your school's ChromeOS devices, from the Google licensing your IT team needs to pairing your screen in Gipper.

Before You Begin: Licensing Requirements

If your school already uses ChromeOS devices for signage, you can run Gipper Display on them without buying new hardware. Before setup, your Workspace admin needs to take care of two things on the Google side:

  1. Purchase either the Chrome Enterprise Upgrade or the Chrome OS Kiosk & Signage Upgrade for your school's Google Workspace. One of these licenses is required for kiosk functionality, which is what lets Gipper Display launch automatically and run full screen. Purchasing and setup need to be done by the Workspace admin account.
  2. During device enrollment, assign a license to each ChromeOS device you want to use for Gipper Display.

Important note:

  • Once a license is tied to a device, it cannot be transferred. 
  • If a device is replaced or de-provisioned, a new license will need to be assigned to the new device.

Gipper Tip: Share this article directly with your IT department. Everything in the next section happens in the Google Admin Console, so it requires an IT administrator with admin access.


 

Set Up the Device in the Google Admin Console

Step 1: Set Gipper Display as a Kiosk App

Setting Gipper Display as a kiosk app means it installs on your enrolled devices automatically and launches full screen on its own, with no one needing to touch the device.

  1. Log in to the Google Admin Console
  2. Go to Devices > Chrome > Apps & Extensions, then open the Kiosks tab
  3. Click the + button and choose Add by URL
  4. Enter https://d.gipper.com and click Save
  5. You should now see an Auto-launch app option above the Gipper app. Click the drop-down directly to the right of it and select Gipper. This sets the app to start automatically
  6. Click Save in the top right corner of the window
     

Step 2: Enroll the Device in Your Google Domain

With Gipper Display set as a kiosk app, enroll each device so it picks up those settings. Follow Google's instructions here: Enroll ChromeOS devices.
 

Step 3: Keep the Screen Always On

Some ChromeOS devices enter sleep mode by default, which would put your display to sleep too. You can prevent this by adjusting the power settings in the Google Admin Console.

  1. Go to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device settings > Kiosk power settings > AC Kiosk power settings
  2. Set Action on idle to Do nothing
  3. Leave Idle timeout empty
  4. Set Screen dim timeout to 0
  5. Set Screen off timeout to 0
  6. Reboot the device once the settings are applied

 

Pair Your Screen in Gipper

Once the IT setup above is complete, the device is ready to connect to your Gipper account.

  1. The ChromeOS device displays a pairing code on screen
  2. In Gipper, go to Displays > Screens > Add Screen and choose Web Browser
  3. Enter the pairing code, name your screen, and click Add Screen
