Background removal tool and cutouts

Gipper provides a background removal tool that utilizes AI technology to enable users to create cutouts in one click. All users on our Pro and Premier plans can remove the background of images (and logos) uploaded into Gipper.

 

This feature is available for:
  • All roles
  • Pro & Premier plans

What is a cutout?

A cutout is an image with the background removed. See below for some examples:

Besides photos, you can also remove the background of logos to make them transparent. We highly recommend always using transparent logos to ensure the highest quality graphics. See below for an example:

Via the gallery

You can remove the background on images (and logos) from the gallery.

  1. Select the image you'd like to remove the background on from your gallery
  2. Click the "Remove Background" button in the top toolbar
  3. Choose between replacing the original and saving a new version
  4. The AI technology will load and remove the background
  5. The new version of the logo will be rendered and saved
Gipper Tip!
  • We suggest to typically save as new so you don't lose the original version of the photo.

 

Via the graphics editor

The experience is slightly different depending on whether the image you've selected is a cutout controller or just a media controller. 

 

Cutout controller

The word "Cutout" will appear in the left-side editing section of the Media tab if the template contains a native cutout field.

  1. Upload the image you'd like to use in the cutout field - you can browse your gallery or upload it from your device
  2. The AI technology will load and remove the background automatically
  3. The new version of the photo will be rendered on the canvas
  4. You can always "Restore Background" if you'd like to revert back to the unedited version
Gipper Tip!
  • If you'd like to edit the size or further crop, use the crop tool by selecting the image on the canvas and then clicking the crop icon in the top toolbar.

 

Media controller

The word "media" will appear in the left-side editing section of the Media tab if the template does not contain a native cutout field.

  1. Select the image you'd like to remove the background on from the canvas
  2. Click the "Remove Background" button in the top toolbar
  3. The AI technology will load and remove the background
  4. The new version of the photo will be rendered on the canvas
  5. You can always "Restore Background" if you'd like to revert back to the unedited version
Gipper Tip!
  • At this time, you cannot use the background removal tool on videos.

 

Logo controller

You have the ability to remove the background on any logo field in addition to photos/media.

  1. Select the logo you'd like to remove the background on from the canvas
  2. Click the "Remove Background" button in the top toolbar
  3. The AI technology will load and remove the background
  4. The new version of the logo will be rendered on the canvas 
Gipper Tip!
  • Cutouts created in the editor will automatically be saved to your gallery.

 

Reusing cutouts

Once you've removed the background of an image or logo, you'll be able to reuse that file in future graphics.

Gipper Tip!
  • You can use the additional elements feature to layer in totally new cutout fields, and be sure to check out the arrange tool to help you move the cutout to the forefront.
  • Please note that additional elements are not available on the mobile app - any saved design that contains an additional element will be rendered incompatible and unavailable on the app.
